By contrast with the expensive and powerful Jensen CV8, the car chosen for Cordelia Winfield was usually a DAF 33 Daffodil, although in Epitaph for a Hero it is an MG 1100. These cars, built in the Netherlands, were very rare in Britain in the 1960s, and much more expensive than the equivalent say Austin A40 Farina. The most notable feature was the automatic transmission, so called Variomatic, which used a rubber belt design and no so-called 'gears'. The actual car used appears to be a 1966 model (although built in 1965), and would thus have been brand new at the time of filming. Whereas The Baron was an American driving a British car, Cordelia, as an English lady, had a Dutch car. One wonders why something like the Hillman Imp, which featured so prominently in Man in A Suitcase, was not employed by the producers.
